My passion for photography has led me to some pretty amazing people. I first came across Arin's work (@arinturkay) a few weeks ago and I was absolutely blown away by it. I think this is due to his very simplistic style that packs so much emotion into one frame. I really wanted to pick his brain to find out where this simple beauty really comes from.
Arin, I just have a few questions to ask you, let's start off with a bit about your background. Where are you from? How long have you been a photographer?
ı am from Turkey - ıt has been about 4 years.
Talk to me about your use of negative space. It's very prominent in your photos.
I thought that my photos should be seen as whole, with the environment. In my opinion Negative space is the key to showing people what I feel and what I see. When they look at my photos they can imagine themselves there - with different emotions.
I fell in love with your use of color (or lack thereof). Can you describe to me why your choice of colors is so important in your images?
ı think I choose colors that make people feel free when they look at my photos and I choose colors that I feel describe me best.
Your work is primarily of locations and things around you. Do you photograph people?
Generally ı don't prefer to take photos of people.
How do you accomplish evoking emotion from your photos?
The emotion comes through in photos from the experience of my life.
What do you love to shoot the most?
ı love the sea (huge waves).
You shoot a lot of incredible scenery, are you traveling specifically to shoot or do you shoot while you travel?
ı am usually planning my travels according to where ı take photos.
Ideally, if you could photograph any thing or subject what would that be?
Statues which have mythological themes.
Do you have any advice for novice photographers looking to create a signature for themselves?
ı advise them to not shoot what they see, but to shoot what they feel and try to find out what is invisible. Also, that they shoot to find out the colors of their lives.
You're stranded on an island and can only have 3 things with you, what would you have?
Cigarettes, wine and a novel.
Last question, what's your favorite color?
